SPIN Forward meets 12 Saturdays over the course of a school year for Lab Days and Field Days. Lab Days are four hours long and include team building and project based learning, as well as mentor-mentee bonding. Field Days are three hours long and offer an opportunity for scholars to see STEM+A in action through visits to STEM+A focused partners and outdoor learning spaces.
The program culminates in a Capstone presentation, where SPIN Forward students develop and present STEM+A - based solutions to real world challenges.
What is SPIN Forward?
SPIN Forward is a transformative program. It builds confidence, community and leadership while providing immersive STEM+A experiences. SPIN Forward students receive tailored curriculum to learn in grade based cohorts by instructors of color accompanied by female-identifying mentors of color from across King County.
SPIN Forward is open to cis girls, trans youth, gender queer youth, gender non-conforming and/or non-binary youth who experience(d) girlhood as a part of their journey entering sixth, seventh, eighth, ninth, and tenth grade in King County. Students of color with the potential for STEM+A curiosity development, leadership and excellence are strongly encouraged to apply.

What makes being part of SPIN Forward a valuable experience for students?
Scholarship and support
Every year, SPIN Forward scholars have the opportunity to earn a participation stipend and build meaningful relationships. By the end of the program, students gain social-emotional skills, support with high school course planning, and guidance in exploring college and career interests.
We see each SPIN Forward student as a whole person, which includes their family. If students or families need additional support, our team is always available to help find the right resources.
Career Connections
Students meet Field Day partners, many of whom are women of color working in STEM+A careers. They learn what it’s like to work in those roles and hear real stories about different career paths. Through conversations and hands-on activities, students discover how what they learn in school connects to real-world opportunities. These experiences help them imagine their futures and build confidence to follow their interests in science, technology, engineering, arts, and math.
Professional Mentoring
SPIN Forward cohorts are paired with female-identifying mentors of color who work in STEM+A fields. These mentors share their experiences through conversations, lab days, and field day activities.
Together, they explore career paths, set goals, and create an educational plan that supports each student’s growth and curiosity.
Summer programming
Each July, SPIN Forward students can attend a week-long summer retreat filled with workshops, team building, and project-based STEM+A learning. Students also take part in planning for the following school year and building stronger connections with their peers and mentors. The retreat is a fun and inspiring way to grow, learn, and get ready for another great year with SPIN Forward.
